Salicylic Acid in skincare

Low concern

Oil-soluble exfoliant; gold standard for acne and congested pores.

Can be used AM or PM depending on concentration and product type. At 0.5–2% in cleansers. Both AM and PM fine. In leave-on toners/serums at 1–2%. PM preferred due to mild photosensitivity. When combined with retinoids, separate AM (BHA) and PM (retinoid) to avoid over-exfoliation. Always use SPF in AM when using BHA leave-on products.

What it is

Salicylic Acid (2-hydroxybenzoic acid) is a lipophilic BHA that penetrates the sebaceous follicle, dissolving desmosomal bonds between corneocytes and emulsifying sebum plugs. Also anti-inflammatory and mildly antibacterial. FDA OTC acne monograph: effective at 0.5–2%. Works best at pH 3–4. Increases photosensitivity. Use SPF. Contraindicated on large areas in infants (risk of salicylism).

The facts

CategoryBHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)
Typical useMorning and evening
Concentration YARAI treats as a full dose2%
EU maximum permitted concentration2.0% (2%)
EU Cosmetics Regulation annexV
EU statusrestricted
EU and US differFDA classifies salicylic acid as an OTC drug active (acne: 0.5–2%; callus: up to 40%). Use at drug concentrations requires an OTC Drug Facts panel in the US, not needed in EU cosmetics.

Why the amount matters, not just the presence

Most ingredient checkers tell you whether something is in the bottle. That is a smaller question than it sounds. Salicylic Acid at 2% and salicylic acid at a trace level are not the same ingredient in any way that affects your skin.

An ingredient list is ordered by quantity, so position carries real information. YARAI reads that position and scores accordingly, which is why the same ingredient can land differently in two different products.

The honest limit: a list gives order, not percentages. Estimating concentration from position is an estimate. It is a better estimate than ignoring position, and it is still an estimate. We would rather tell you that than let a number look more certain than it is.

Regulatory status

EU Annex V preservative: max 0.5% (acid). Annex III: up to 2% for hair care (rinse-off), 3% for callus/corn removers. Banned in under-3 products.

Common questions

What does salicylic acid do in a skincare product?

Oil-soluble exfoliant; gold standard for acne and congested pores.

How much salicylic acid should a product contain?

YARAI treats 2% as a full dose for this ingredient. Below that, the ingredient is present but is scored as contributing less. An ingredient list gives you the order of ingredients, not their percentages, so this is an estimate read from position rather than a measurement.

Is salicylic acid restricted in the EU?

The EU Cosmetics Regulation permits this ingredient up to 2.0% in leave-on cosmetics, listed under V. 2%

When should I use salicylic acid?

Can be used AM or PM depending on concentration and product type. At 0.5–2% in cleansers. Both AM and PM fine. In leave-on toners/serums at 1–2%. PM preferred due to mild photosensitivity. When combined with retinoids, separate AM (BHA) and PM (retinoid) to avoid over-exfoliation. Always use SPF in AM when using BHA leave-on products.

Point your camera at a product. YARAI identifies it from the label, finds that product's full ingredient list from published sources, and scores it. No barcode and no box needed, which is how it handles imported and small-brand products.
