Retinyl Palmitate in skincare

Low concern

Mildest retinoid; gentler but requires three enzymatic conversions for activity.

PM use is recommended. Retinyl palmitate is photolabile and some research suggests it may generate free radicals when exposed to UV light (FDA/NTP 2012 study). While the risk at cosmetic concentrations is debated, PM use eliminates the theoretical UV-interaction concern. Never apply retinyl palmitate in AM products without diligent SPF 30+. EU SCCS preliminary opinion (2022) recommends 0.05% for body lotions and 0.3% for face products, with a warning against use in sun products.

What it is

Retinyl Palmitate is a retinol ester. The most common retinol storage form found naturally in the liver and skin. Requires three enzymatic conversions before becoming active retinoic acid, making it the least potent but best tolerated retinoid. Excellent for retinoid beginners, seniors, or sensitive skin. Safe at 1–5% for face, 0.05% for body per EU SCCS recommendation.

Why the amount matters, not just the presence

Most ingredient checkers tell you whether something is in the bottle. That is a smaller question than it sounds. Retinyl Palmitate at 5% and retinyl palmitate at a trace level are not the same ingredient in any way that affects your skin.

An ingredient list is ordered by quantity, so position carries real information. YARAI reads that position and scores accordingly, which is why the same ingredient can land differently in two different products.

The honest limit: a list gives order, not percentages. Estimating concentration from position is an estimate. It is a better estimate than ignoring position, and it is still an estimate. We would rather tell you that than let a number look more certain than it is.

Common questions

What does retinyl palmitate do in a skincare product?

Mildest retinoid; gentler but requires three enzymatic conversions for activity.

How much retinyl palmitate should a product contain?

YARAI treats 5% as a full dose for this ingredient. Below that, the ingredient is present but is scored as contributing less. An ingredient list gives you the order of ingredients, not their percentages, so this is an estimate read from position rather than a measurement.

When should I use retinyl palmitate?

PM use is recommended. Retinyl palmitate is photolabile and some research suggests it may generate free radicals when exposed to UV light (FDA/NTP 2012 study). While the risk at cosmetic concentrations is debated, PM use eliminates the theoretical UV-interaction concern. Never apply retinyl palmitate in AM products without diligent SPF 30+.
