What it is
Sorbitol (D-glucitol) is a polyol (sugar alcohol) derived from glucose that functions as a humectant, drawing moisture to skin and keeping the stratum corneum hydrated. In shaving creams and gels, sorbitol helps maintain skin hydration during the shave, supplementing glycerin's moisturizing properties. Also widely used in toothpastes as a humectant and sweetener, and in mouthwashes as a solvent. In cosmetics, sorbitol has additional emollient properties, contributes to product texture and stability, and acts as a mild preservative booster. Well-tolerated by all skin types; no sensitization or irritation concerns at cosmetic concentrations. FDA-approved for use in oral hygiene products and cosmetics. CIR Expert Panel reviewed as safe. Used at 1–20% in shaving products and cosmetics.

Why the amount matters, not just the presence
