Sodium Lactate in skincare

Low concern

Sodium salt of lactic acid; NMF humectant and pH buffer. Gentler and non-photosensitizing unlike free lactic acid.

Safe for both AM and PM products as a humectant and pH buffer. Unlike free lactic acid, sodium lactate (its sodium salt) is pH-neutral and does not cause photosensitivity at standard humectant concentrations. No time-of-day restrictions at cosmetic use levels (2–12%).

What it is

Sodium Lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid, occurring naturally in the skin's NMF (approximately 12% of NMF content) where it maintains hydration and the slightly acidic surface pH. As a cosmetic ingredient, it functions as a powerful humectant (comparable to glycerin), mild keratolytic (very gentle at cosmetic concentrations), and pH buffer. Critical distinction from lactic acid: sodium lactate is essentially pH-neutral in formulation and does NOT cause photosensitivity at standard cosmetic concentrations (unlike free lactic acid), making it appropriate for AM use without SPF concerns. Also used as a humectant/lactic acid buffer in cosmetic AHA products to fine-tune exfoliant aggression. Effective at 2–12% for hydration. Safe for all skin types; gentle enough for use near the eye area.

Why the amount matters, not just the presence

Most ingredient checkers tell you whether something is in the bottle. That is a smaller question than it sounds. Sodium Lactate at 12% and sodium lactate at a trace level are not the same ingredient in any way that affects your skin.

An ingredient list is ordered by quantity, so position carries real information. YARAI reads that position and scores accordingly, which is why the same ingredient can land differently in two different products.

The honest limit: a list gives order, not percentages. Estimating concentration from position is an estimate. It is a better estimate than ignoring position, and it is still an estimate. We would rather tell you that than let a number look more certain than it is.

Common questions

What does sodium lactate do in a skincare product?

Sodium salt of lactic acid; NMF humectant and pH buffer. Gentler and non-photosensitizing unlike free lactic acid.

How much sodium lactate should a product contain?

YARAI treats 12% as a full dose for this ingredient. Below that, the ingredient is present but is scored as contributing less. An ingredient list gives you the order of ingredients, not their percentages, so this is an estimate read from position rather than a measurement.

When should I use sodium lactate?

Safe for both AM and PM products as a humectant and pH buffer. Unlike free lactic acid, sodium lactate (its sodium salt) is pH-neutral and does not cause photosensitivity at standard humectant concentrations. No time-of-day restrictions at cosmetic use levels (2–12%).

Point your camera at a product. YARAI identifies it from the label, finds that product's full ingredient list from published sources, and scores it. No barcode and no box needed, which is how it handles imported and small-brand products.
