What it is
Palmitic Acid (hexadecanoic acid, C16:0) is the most abundant saturated fatty acid in both animals and plants (palm oil, lard, butter, tallow), and one of the most natural skin-identical fatty acids. Found at significant concentrations in human sebum. In shaving creams and bar soaps, palmitic acid is saponified with KOH/NaOH to form potassium/sodium palmitate, contributing to a creamy, cushioning lather and skin-softening properties. In moisturizers and creams, palmitic acid acts as an emollient that reinforces the skin's lipid barrier (it is a ceramide biosynthesis precursor). It is a mild emulsifier when combined with bases. Comedogenicity: 2/5 (low) for the fatty acid form. Generally safe for all skin types including acne-prone. CIR Expert Panel reviewed as safe. Also used as an emulsifying agent when combined with triethanolamine or other bases.
