What it is
Lauric Acid (dodecanoic acid, C12:0) is the dominant fatty acid in coconut oil (~48%) and palm kernel oil, responsible for the abundant, cleansing lather and antimicrobial properties of coconut-oil soaps. In shaving soaps and bar soaps, lauric acid saponifies with KOH/NaOH to form potassium/sodium laurate, producing the primary cleansing and foaming action. Lauric acid itself has notable antimicrobial activity. It is converted to monolaurin in the body, which has demonstrated activity against lipid-coated bacteria and viruses. However, lauric acid has a high comedogenicity rating (4/5) in leave-on formulations. It is a well-known pore-clogging ingredient for acne-prone skin when used in leave-on products. In rinse-off cleansers and shaving products, comedogenicity is not a practical concern. CIR Expert Panel reviewed as safe. Used at 2–30% in soap formulations.

Why the amount matters, not just the presence
