What it is
Iron Oxides (CI 77491 Red, CI 77492 Yellow, CI 77499 Black) are inorganic mineral pigments composed of iron and oxygen in various ratios, creating the red, yellow, and black pigment bases that are blended to achieve virtually all skin tone shades in foundation, concealer, blush, lipstick, eyeliner, and eyeshadow. FDA-approved color additives (21 CFR 73.2250) for cosmetic use on all external areas. Completely insoluble and inert. No skin absorption, no sensitization, no systemic exposure. Additionally, iron oxide pigments absorb visible light (400–700 nm) wavelengths not blocked by zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Studies (Bernstein et al., 2012) show tinted mineral sunscreens containing iron oxides provide superior protection against melasma compared to untinted SPF, because visible light drives melanogenesis in melasma patients. Synthetic iron oxides (used in cosmetics) are preferred over naturally occurring ones due to purity and freedom from heavy metal contamination.

Why the amount matters, not just the presence
Most ingredient checkers tell you whether something is in the bottle. That is a smaller question than it sounds. Iron Oxides at 100% and iron oxides at a trace level are not the same ingredient in any way that affects your skin.
