What it is
Benzyl Alcohol is a naturally occurring aromatic alcohol found in many essential oils (jasmine, ylang-ylang, neroli) with a faint, pleasant aromatic scent. It has a dual role in cosmetics: (1) Fragrance component. One of the 26 EU-mandated fragrance allergens requiring individual declaration under Regulation 1223/2009 Annex III if above 0.001% (leave-on) or 0.01% (rinse-off); (2) Preservative. EU permits up to 1% as a broad-spectrum preservative active against bacteria and some fungi. Sensitization rate ~1–2% in patch-tested populations. Generally well-tolerated at preservative concentrations. Can cause stinging on very sensitive or compromised skin. Safe at approved concentrations for most users.

Why the amount matters, not just the presence
