What it is
Behentrimonium Chloride (BTAC, docosyltrimethylammonium chloride) is a quaternary ammonium cationic surfactant with an exceptionally long C22 carbon chain, making it one of the most conditioning and substantive (strongly hair-binding) cationic agents in hair care. The positive charge bonds electrostatically to the negatively charged, damaged sites on hair cuticles (which carry a net negative charge), depositing a uniform conditioning film that reduces static, friction, and combing force, dramatically improving detangling and manageability. One of the best-tolerated hair conditioning agents. Far gentler than shorter-chain quats like cetrimonium chloride at equivalent concentrations. Typically derived from canola (rapeseed) oil. Safe for most individuals with nut/seed oil sensitivities. No significant sensitization, irritation, or systemic safety concerns at cosmetic concentrations (0.5–5%). CIR-reviewed as safe.

Why the amount matters, not just the presence
