Benzoyl peroxide can reduce how well some retinoids work if used at the same time. Using them at different times of day or on alternate days keeps both effective. Note: some products like adapalene are designed to be stable with benzoyl peroxide, so combination products are fine.
This is the one pair on the list where something genuinely chemical happens rather than just irritation adding up. Benzoyl peroxide is an oxidizer, and it can oxidize many retinoids on contact, which reduces how much of the retinoid is still doing its job. It is also the best-evidenced rule Yarai carries, resting on a randomized controlled trial rather than general guidance.

Benzoyl peroxide can oxidize retinoids, weakening their effectiveness and stacking irritation. Apply on separate days, or use a combined formulation designed for stability (adapalene and benzoyl peroxide combination products are an exception).

Exception: Adapalene is formulated to stay stable with benzoyl peroxide, so combination products built around it are exempt from this rule rather than flagged by it. Yarai records the exemption on the ingredient itself, which is why scanning such a product doesn't produce a warning.
